COVER STORY – TOP 100 AUSTRALIA’S MOST INFLUENTIAL ENGINEERS ASSOCIATIONS Robin Batterham, 68 President of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Melbourne Chemical engineer, University of Melbourne D r Robin Batterham is the president of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) which has 780 Fellow members. In the past year, ATSE has released four reports aimed at infl uencing policy options on nanotechnology, biofuels, energy technology and the costs of electricity. Th e organisation’s total membership stands at 190,000 including service members and affi liates. Crews is pleased that the organisation’s At B Ease mental health awareness strategy and Operation Life, which is a suicide prevention program, are fulfilling expectations. The Mental Health Council has endorsed the At Ease program as representing best practice in raising mental health awareness. An evaluation will be conducted on both programs over the next four years by the Australian Centre for Post-Traumatic Mental Health. Recommendations have been made by Professor David Dunt from the University of Melbourne in two reviews – Mental Health in the Defence Force and Suicide in the Veteran Community. Crews said another highlight in the past year was the heightened community awareness of Australia’s military heritage through observance of the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I. Within RSL Australia, there has been enhanced support by the RSL sub-branches to their communities, particularly in rural and regional areas, and to the serving men and women of the Australian Defence Force. When not engaged in his role with RSL Australia and other voluntary commitments, Crews enjoys cooking, reading, walking, and the collecting and appreciation of wine. ill Crews is the national president of RSL Australia which is the largest national or- tive transport fuels for Australia and held an international workshop for electricity generation called Accelerating Technological Change. According to Batterham, goals in the coming year include the continuing development of new governance arrangements for ATSE, building on its international program of science and technology development and taking strong positions in the public policy area on issues relevant to the Academy. Chris Champion, 56 President, International Federation of Municipal Engineering, Sydney Civil engineer, University of Technology Sydney of Municipal Engineering (IFME) which comprises the 13 countries of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Israel, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Th e Netherlands, and the UK. He is the national chief executive C offi cer of the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) which has 2000 members. Champion is looking forward to attending the 16th IFME World Congress on Municipal Engineering in September. This will be held in conjunction with IPWEA’s own International Public Works Conference. Th rough IPWEA, Champion has been involved in infl uencing the federal government in recognising the need for improved infrastructure asset management. Th e organisation is launching the Australian Infrastructure Financial Management Guidelines shortly which will provide new national guidelines for infrastructure accounting and the sustainable management of infrastructure.
