COVER STORY -- TOP 100 48 ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA | JUNE 2011 Consulting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SMEC Holdings, Melbourne Civil engineer, Gordon Institute of Technology/ Deakin University Ross Hitt has been at the helm of SMEC Holdings since 2009. An unlisted public company, SMEC is staff-owned. The company has over 4000 employees and more than 40 offices in Australia, Africa, South Asia, the Middle East and Asia Pacific. It is one of Australia s most internationally diversified consulting services firms which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2010. Hitt himself has worked and lived in a number of countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Recent contracts for the company have included the Ulu Jelai Hydropower project in Malaysia and the South West rail project in NSW. SMEC has been working on all three major desalination projects in Australia -- Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne. While the company s traditional strengths have been in dams, water supply, roads and tunnelling, recently it has also strengthened services to the rail sector and is building up new expertise in ports and harbours. Hitt said 2012 "looks like being a good year for growth, with strong work in hand." A major challenge is "to continue to employ talented resources across our diverse business."
